The ‘Community Bench’ is designed to create opportunities to build new relationships and strengthen bonds within a neighborhood.
People intuitively react and exploit things in the environment, for this reason I designed the bench and tools to ‘speak for themselves’; instantly telling the user how the components can be constructed. The instruction manual is concealed to trigger social interaction and discussion, allowing people to decode the product.
Oversized tools are provided to allow a team of all different ages to work together in order to build a communal feature. The system gives people the creative freedom to adorn and customize its shape and function according to the personal taste of the community involved. As a result it gives them collective ownership and a memorable landmark to be enjoyed time and time again.
